Want to journey to the edge of our galaxy, age 50 years in a matter of seconds, land a virtual reality plane, battle the superbugs that live on your toilet, or get behind the wheel of a sun powered racing car? Then join us for this annual opportunity to go behind the scenes of a word class university and peak into the future through its ground-breaking research.

Imperial Festival has something for all ages to enjoy, from young children ready to be inspired by the latest in scientific discoveries, to adults looking to get up to date with medical advances and new technology whilst enjoying delicious food and a variety of music and dance performances.

This year’s Festival includes a brand new Food zone showcasing the scientific revolution taking place from farm to fork. It will include scientists working to improve eating through wider sensory experiences, or make cheese creamier through physics, whilst savings the planet (and our pollinating bees) from environmental change, and our waistlines from an obesity crisis.

For all the latest news, sneak previews and behind the scenes photos, you can follow the Festival build up on Facebook and Twitter. And don't forget to share your experiences using the Festival hashtag #impfest

What is happening?

Imperial Festival is the one weekend a year where this word leading university throws open its doors and gives the public an opportunity to go behind-the-scenes and explore ground-breaking research and exciting collaborations with our Albertopolis neighbours.

This free weekend for all the family brings together hundreds of attractions, live interactive experiments, new technology demonstrations, in-depth talks, lab tours, creative workshops and performances within zones themed around Robots, Superbugs, Health & Wellbeing, the Future, and Energy and Environment. This year will include opportunities to:

  • Watch Robots that fly, clean your home, perform surgery, and drive our cars.

  • Find if you are packing a real punch out by having a go using our unique smart boxing gloves and punching bags

  • Explore the gadgets that could revolutionise the home of tomorrow

  • See live demonstration of fire’s behaviour and find out why the Great Fire of London couldn’t happen today due to the efforts of fire engineers

  • Try out an ‘Intelligent Kiosk’ photobooth and find out if robots can guess your age, gender and emotions

  • Experience the challenge of performing surgery with our surgery simulator

  • Check out the bikes and wheelchairs that could power future Team GB Paralympians to medals

  • Journey into the tiny world of bacteria and the organisms that share our homes and bodies, before learning all about the threat of antimicrobial resistance in our Superbug Zone

  • Make jelly worms and DNA bracelets with your young budding scientists in the Explore Zone

For those after a more relaxed festival experience, escape the sights and sounds of the Festival’s research zones by:

  • Popping in to an inspiring talk on anything from engineering life and London’s housing problem, to the microbial zoo that lives in our gut and makes our tummy rumble, and the potential impact of Brexit on British science

  • Contemplating the role of science with art installations and thought-provoking pieces exhibited within our student curated Contemplation zone

  • Tucking into freshly cooked meals within our Farmer’s Market and washing it down with a tipple at our pop-up pub, the Haemo Globe Inn

  • Joining one of behind the scenes tours featuring opportunities to relax under a sky full of stars in our pop-up planetarium, and become fully immersed in new research within our 313 degree, 64 screen Data Observatory
